Why We Exist
Built in the dark
March 2020. The world stopped, and the people who work nights suddenly had their nights to themselves.
It started as a way to survive. It became a way to make something of our own, and a room to share it in.
Who Built It
The creators
Illustrators to storyboard a dream. Fabricators to build it. Musicians to make the room sing. Bartenders to fill it. The true spirit of a distillery goes beyond the glass, into the intentional, analog moments you have to be there for.
The Obscure is an independent distillery. It’s what happens when the people who stand in the shadows take the stage.

HOW WE DISTILL
Our philosophy
House-distilled in downtown Los Angeles. No additives. No flavor concentrates.
Archives, not trends
A gin distilled from a Black Death remedy. A whisky that reunites Scotland and Appalachia after 200 million years of continental drift. A rum from the ancestor of rum itself. Every bottle starts as a question asked of an archive.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
A rye matured on virgin oak, uncharred. A liqueur built from three continents. A brandy that breaks its own definition. Deliberate spirits start with deliberation.
Impossible ingredients
Restoration-orchard American chestnut. Alpine wormwoods from the mountainsides of France. Red rice and ragi from Javanese fermentation traditions. If a recipe calls for it, we track it down.

From sixteen guests to one hundred thousand
March 2020
Company founded. World closed. Original business plan shredded.
DECEMBER 2021
A winter solstice gathering for sixteen guests in an abandoned Arts District bar (formerly Villains Tavern). We never left.
JULY 2022
Season 1 launches. A guided tasting staged as theater: three introductory spirits, three cocktails honoring the classics.
SEPTEMBER 2023
Season 2 launches. Three new spirits, and the Luminarium opens.
APRIL 2024
Membership launches. The regulars make it official.
AUGUST 2025
Season 3 launches. The catalog reaches nine spirits. New rooms open.
JULY 2026
One hundred thousand guests. Find your way in.
