Search speakeasy Los Angeles and you will find us. That is how most people arrive, and for a while we let it stand. But it is not accurate, and being straight about this matters more than owning a search term.
A speakeasy is a bar that hides. Unmarked, no sign, and the point is that you find the door and walk in. The modern version keeps the theatre — a phone booth, a bookcase, a password. Underneath, it is still a bar. You can turn up.
You cannot turn up here. No bar to walk into, no stool to take, no bartender waiting on your order. That single fact is the whole answer.
WHAT A SPEAKEASY IS
An unmarked bar you walk into. Order what you like, stay as long as you like. The secrecy is packaging; underneath it is a bar.
WHAT THE OBSCURE IS
A ticketed tasting in three acts. Fixed start time, an assigned seat, six pours in order, a live performance. Two hours, then it ends.
WHY PEOPLE MIX THEM UP
The door you would walk past. The dark. The Arts District. The refusal to explain much in advance. The atmosphere overlaps exactly; the format not at all.
This is the wrong recommendation, and we would rather say so now. If you want a hidden bar, Los Angeles has plenty of good ones nearby.
What we do is different: six pours served with purpose, the story behind each one, and a performance woven through the night.

No. A speakeasy is a bar you can walk into. This is a ticketed guided tasting with a fixed start time, so the format is closer to a small theatre production than a bar.
No. Every seat is booked in advance and the room is capped, so there is nothing held back at the door.
Historically, an unlicensed Prohibition-era bar that operated without a sign. Today the word usually means a bar styled after that idea — hidden entrance, no frontage, often a reservation, but still a bar you enter and order from.
